There was a time in the garden of Eden when Adam and Eve were in total submission to God. They had never disobeyed Him and so had full access in body and spirit to Him. The time came, as we all know, when they disobeyed Him, and that was the point when self raised itself up over spirit.
Prior to the fall, man’s spirit ruled within him. After the fall, man’s will ascended and took over. In this way, the spirit of man died to God and became dormant, leaving man’s will in control. “When she saw that the fruit was pleasing to the eye, and desirous to make one wise, she disobeyed God, took it and ate, and gave some to her husband who was with her and he ate.” An act of selfishness, and unloving towards God Who had made them and given them everything they needed for a perfect life. Sad isn’t it, but that’s what selfishness is…The opposite to godliness.
That’s why we must to be ‘born again’ to be saved and enter God’s Kingdom. To be born again we have to surrender our will under God’s authority. In other words, we have to undo what was done in Eden. This brings our spirit back to life and re establishes our connection with God. Our spirit, along with God’s Holy Spirit, re ascends over and above our will, so that He is once again in control. Our connection with God is spiritual. Though Adam and Eve had a physical connection as well, we will have to wait for that. Only in heaven will we once again be physically in God’s presence.
“And I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
